How Does FSMA Compliance Affect Shippers
“Shippers” are anyone who arranges for the transportation of food in the United States, i.e. a food manufacturer or a freight dispatcher.
Under the new regulations, shippers must develop and implement written procedures for:
1. Ensuring the vehicles and equipment used in food transportation operations are in the appropriate sanitary condition so as to prevent food from becoming unsafe during transportation.
2. Ensuring the transportation of bulk food is done safely and any previous cargo does not make food unsafe.
3. Ensuring that food is transported under adequate temperature control.
These procedures must be specified to the carrier, and loader where required, in writing.
